Decision making

Personality awareness in decision making.

Are you aware of how your personality influences your decision-making?

In a recent blog post, I shared with you how I lost $1700 in a day. To understand the context, please go back and read that post. The loss happened because of the overuse of my and my daughter's personality strength.

But there's more to the story. After we lost the $1700, I wanted us to learn from it and prevent future losses( this is the analytic characteristic of my personality also).
As a certified DISC method of human behavior consultant, I'd like to know what other role our personality played in this decision-making.
So I asked my daughter what took her so long to decide. Finally, she confided in me and said actually, mom, "I didn't want to wear braces all through high school. I want to be able to smile without braces showing on my teeth."
As a mother of two teenage daughters and a preteen son, this meant a lot to me to hear my daughter be free to be herself. Our children must have self-awareness, which is vital to their personal growth. We learned our lesson and are now prepared to make better decisions in the future.

I like to ask other parents raising teens, what is behind the decisions or indecision of your teenagers? Do you understand what influences or informs their choices in various situations?
Have you taken the time to find out the reason behind the reason of their behaviors?
I wanted to alert parents that our children, like us, have reasons for their actions. Our role is to help them understand decision-making and equip them with resources to make informed and on-time decisions.

Today it might be $1700 lost( as it was in our case). Tomorrow might be losing a job, a promotion, or any opportunity that indecision or late decision can affect.

Think to yourself, how does your personality show up in your decision-making? How does it affect your work choices, relationships, and interaction with other people?

Your personality may cause you to overuse your strength, so it becomes a weakness or makes you act out of fear.

Based on the DISC method of human behavior, every one of the four personalities has factors that affect their decision-making.

If you are a D personality, you like to win, so your basic need is to want to be in charge, and you fear losing control, which may swing your decision one way or the other.
If you are an I personality, since you like recognition, you want to find approval, so your fear of not being liked or recognized may affect your decision-making.
The S personality likes acceptance and seeks to be appreciated, so feeling insecure may cause them to act out of fear.
The C personality like to be right and feel valued, but your fear of being criticized might affect your choices.

In conclusion, the ability to make good decisions is a lifelong skill. Therefore, the best place to start is to discover your and your child's personality because every personality makes decisions differently.
